New training: IEC61508 and Functional Safety for the lift and escalator industry

Modern lifts and escalators can’t do without them anymore: programmable electronic systems and software. For whom is the Functional Safety training of Liftinstituut intended?

Liftinstituut has developed this training for designers, developers and engineers in the lift and escalator industry. They are involved in the development of programmable electronic safety systems (PESS), which have to be implemented according to the IEC 61508 standard.

  • Day 1 & 2: stage 1 (training and workshop)
    History, Basic Failure Theory, Strategy to Achieve Functional Safety, Risk, HARA, Safety Function, Safe State, SIL identification and SIL assignment, HFT, SFF, SC, PFH, PFDavg, Demand regimes, Safety Lifecycle, Safety Requirement Specification, Verification, Validation, HW and Systematic Capability, Application to Lifts: relation between EN81-20, EN81:40, EN81:50 and IEC61508.
  • Day 3 & 4: stage 2 (training and exercises)
    Topics: Diagnostics, Diagnostic Coverage, FMEA, FMEDA methodology, No Part and No Effect Failures, FMEDA as basis for determination of 𝛌du and SIL capability, Fault Exclusion, SW Design, SW safety Lifecycle, Test Coverage, Fault Injection tests, Endurance Test, requirements for Independence, RBD’s and formulae (most used voted architectures in lifts), Common Cause.
  • Day 5: final assessment of the training
    Covering Stage 1 and Stage 2 of the program, with 75% minimum limit for passing.

In order to maintain the required level of competence, it is advised to follow a refreshment of stage 1 and 2 every three years or when a new revision of the IEC61508 standard is published.

About the trainer: Elena Mauro

Elena Mauro is certification specialist at Liftinstituut with functional safety as area of expertise. After working for many years as a safety consultant in the process industry, she now uses her functional safety expertise in certification projects of lifts, safety components and machines. Elena has an impressive CV. She studied Process Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology, where she also completed her post-Masters in System Engineering to combine process and system engineering. She then worked for a supplier of safety systems for thirteen years. First as a programmer, later as a system engineer and finally as a certified safety consultant. Besides her advisory tasks, she is also a very experienced trainer.
