With the new Binary Board V0, NAYAR enables remote monitoring of lift status and safety even without direct access to the controller. The board is connected to various points within the safety chain. To ensure that any possible malfunction of the board would have no impact on the lift's safety functions, the Spanish company had the product certified by Liftinstituut—with great results. Project Manager Vanessa Martinez: “We are very satisfied with the speed and communication.”
Two-Way Communication System
For over eighteen years, NAYAR has been a key player in the Spanish market providing telecommunication solutions for the lift industry. Vanessa: “EN 81-28 requires that the two-way emergency communication system in lifts be tested every three days. In 2007 we launched a call center to handle emergency and test calls from lifts—our first service for lift manufacturers, maintenance companies, and building owners. Our service includes a customer portal where users and maintenance teams can verify whether the communication system is working properly.”
Over the years, NAYAR has expanded this service with hardware such as phones, information screens, and multimedia displays for lifts. Recently, the company introduced a new innovation. “In addition to managing emergency and test calls, we can now monitor the full behavior of the lift through telemetry. We collect real-time data directly from the controller and send it to our own customer portal or the client’s IT environment.”
Telemetry Solutions
To support this telemetry service, NAYAR developed the GSR gateway, which includes GSM technology as well as router technology. “Modern controllers typically have a CAN or other serial port, which gives us access to all status information. Connecting is just a matter of plugging in a cable.”
“With older systems it’s more challenging to make a connection. These often lack a controller port. To monitor these older lifts remotely, you have to physically tap into all the signals—for instance, by connecting to LEDs that light up in case of a fault or overload. That’s why we developed our Binary Board V0, which has 14 binary inputs.”
Also DC Inputs and Relay Outputs
According to Vanessa, NAYAR’s Binary Board V0 is a unique product: “Ours is the only board that includes not just AC, but also DC inputs. This saves a lot of hassle during installation, as many controllers operate on DC. We also added two relay outputs, which can be used to remotely reset the controller by sending a command via the GSR that triggers the board.”
Since the Binary Board V0 is connected to the lift's safety chain, NAYAR wanted to be absolutely sure it wouldn’t interfere with the controller’s safety mechanisms. “No one wants to face a situation where safety is at risk due to a wet or malfunctioning board. That’s why we submitted the product to the certification specialists at Liftinstituut, as also explicitly requested by our client Schindler.”
Impressed
The certification process went smoothly, according to Vanessa: “The Liftinstituut team contributed meaningful technical insights, communicated clearly, and worked efficiently. Both we and Schindler were impressed with how quickly everything was completed. We were able to connect our own technical experts directly with theirs, which fostered a strong working relationship. Yes, if we ever need certification again in the future, we’ll definitely turn to Liftinstituut.”
Meanwhile, NAYAR continues to evolve—supported partly by Spanish legislation: “As of July, Spain has a new law that also requires a two-way emergency communication system in lifts built before 2006. So, we’re expecting strong demand for our systems.”
