How can manufacturers of lifts and safety components successfully introduce innovative technologies that deviate from existing standards to the global market? As a Notified Body and AECO, Liftinstituut has long provided certification services to manufacturers who want to sell their products in Europe and North America. Soon, this expertise may extend worldwide. The organization is currently undergoing the accreditation process to be appointed as a Lift Certification Body.

Assessment based on performance-based standards

Liftinstituut CEO John van Vliet explains: “Recently, a worldwide methodology has been introduced for new technologies that do not fit into traditional pre-scriptive based standards. This new methodology allows countries outside Europe and North America to opt for a conformity assessment procedure based on performance-based standards.”

The procedure combines the strengths of the North American performance-based standards with those of the European Directive. “It offers an attractive alternative for authorities that prefer not to commit exclusively to either the European or North American model.”

Towards international acceptance

Van Vliet confirms that the arrival of this third methodology is good news for manufacturers who want to sell their innovative products outside Europe and North America. “Of course, national authorities must first incorporate this certification scheme into their legislation. Broad adoption will take time – just as it did in Europe, where it took years before all member states aligned.”

“In the meantime, we want to ensure that we are accredited as a third party for this new methodology, the so-called Lift Certification Body. This will allow us to respond quickly and effectively when our clients request certification under the new scheme.”

At the International Elevator & Escalator Symposium 2024, John van Vliet provided an in-depth explanation of the new performance-based methodology for developing, assessing, and certifying innovations in lift safety, as well as the role of the Lift Certification Body.
